Formed in 1956
In 1956, a group of young men came together and formed the Cochér Car Club. The group had been doing some street racing but decided it was not what they wanted to do as a group, so the club changed its purpose to helping out others. There was a period when they were young men that military service, marriage and family caused the group to disband, but in 1999, they regrouped and again set out to provide support to the community. In the early days, the club would offer assistance to people on the highways and freeways, but now it is much too busy out there.
After forming, the group wanted club jackets and the Adams family wanted to build a go-kart track. To the benefit of both, the Cochér Car Club was hired to clear out the weeds and brush on the Adams land for the track. They worked weekends until the land was clear and were paid enough to buy their first club jackets. They were lucky Mother Adams did not deduct from their pay all the great food she made for them while working.
The current mission of the Cochér Car Club is to assist and mentor youth and others of the community. The club conducts an annual raffle to raise funds in order to do this. Some of the other events the car club sponsors are the annual Youth Day at Adams Sports Park where at least thirty youth can safely ride karts with proper safety gear, and breakfast and lunch are provided by Cochér Car Club. The Club has also taken groups of youth to the boat races at Lake Elsinore. Support is given to the adult organizations such as Musicians in Action and Riverside African-American Historical Society by purchasing advertisements in their program booklets, etc. Under the direction of President Jerry Adams and his family, the annual Black History Car show is held before the parade each year, where club cars are on display. The car club also participates in the Annual Riverside Black History Parade, where members proudly drive their classic and vintage cars in the parade.
The car club meets the 1st Saturday each month at the club house provided by Mr. Willie T. Jones III.
Car Club was named by Woodie Rucker Hughes.
